Sustainable Sugarcane Paper: Why it Makes the Greenest Gift Wrap, Yet!

Occasions for gifting and celebrating are sprinkled throughout the year, unfortunately all our happy moments are leading to sad statistics like millions of pounds of wasted gift wrap overflowing our landfills (that's every year!) Most of us often feel confused as to what can and cannot be recycled, as many conventional wrapping papers and gift bags are laden with non-recyclable materials like glitter, foils, and plastic coatings.

At Wrappily, we believe in celebrating joyfully, without the burden of feeling like you have to choose between being sustainable and sparking happiness. You can do both! It’s why we are ridiculously excited about our new line of gift wrapping paper and gift bags made from a surprising source: sugarcane.

Wrappily is using Sugarcane as a smart renewable raw material for gift wrapping paper

From swaying, grassy stalks to stylish wrappings for your presents—is this the ultimate party trick for the planet? This innovative raw material offers an eco-friendly alternative to conventional tree-based paper. Let’s dive into the remarkable sustainability benefits of sugarcane paper and discover how it can transform our gifting for the greener.

The Sweet Story of Sugarcane Paper

Sugarcane paper is made from the fibrous byproduct left after the stalks are crushed for juice extraction. Once considered waste, this remnant fiber called bagasse, was burned or discarded, but now it's finding new life as a sustainable fiber source for paper products.

The process of making paper from sugarcane bagasse

Making Paper from Sugarcane Bagasse

  1. Juice Extraction - Cane stalks are harvested and crushed to extract their sweet juices, which are used for sugar production.
  2. Fiber Glow Up - The remaining fiber is collected and sometimes dried or shredded for further processing. Turns out sugarcane bagasse is rich in cellulose (~35%-45%), which are the strong, durable molecular building blocks necessary for paper making.
  3. Perfecting the Pulp - The bagasse is treated mechanically or chemically to break down the fibers and separate them from lignin and hemicellulose. At this point, the pulp may be washed to remove impurities. Bagasse is an easy fiber to process and requires less energy and fewer chemicals to process compared to traditional wood pulp.
  4. Paper Time - The finished pulp is diluted with water into a slurry, which is passed through a machine to form sheets. It gets pressed and dried to remove excess water and can undergo additional processes like calendaring (smoothing) and cutting to achieve the desired thickness and finish. The resulting paper is sturdy and ready for commercial use.

Most Eco-friendly Gift Wrap Yet! Sustainability Benefits of Sugarcane Paper

From grass fiber to gift bag, Wrappily's sugarcane paper gift wrap products are the most eco-friendly yet.

Sugarcane paper boasts an array of environmental advantages over traditional tree-based paper. As a rapidly renewable resource, it makes an excellent raw material for paper products like gift wrapping paper. Choosing sugarcane paper lowers environmental impact of your gifting as it helps conserve forests and trees. Sugarcane paper is 100% recyclable and compostable—in fact sugarcane products biodegrade within 30-90 days returning nutrients to the soil.

Turning sugar industry ‘waste’ into environmentally friendly paper products, creates a closed-loop system, or circular economy. For every ton of cane sugar produced, two to three tons of bagasse remain. Repurposing this agricultural byproduct reduces waste and reclaims valuable natural resources, further championing the sustainability of the sugarcane paper.

Why Sugarcane Paper is a Sustainability Superstar 🌟

1. Rapidly Renewable Resource
Sugarcane is a fast-growing grass that grows in 9-14 months. In comparison, it takes decades (30 to 40 years!) for trees to mature for harvest. This rapid renewability makes sugarcane a highly sustainable raw material for paper making.

2. Reduces Deforestation
A major issue for climate change, forest depletion is the second leading cause of global warming. Clear-cutting forests, however purposeful or sustainable, leads to
increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere because it results in the loss of trees that absorb CO2.

3. Lower Environmental Impact
Studies show that sugarcane paper production requires less energy, bleaching, and fewer chemicals in comparison to traditional wood pulp paper, minimizing pollution and environmental harm.

4. Biodegradable & Compostable
Sugarcane bagasse paper and products are fully biodegradable and compostable, meaning they break down naturally, returning nutrients to the soil, without leaving harmful residue in the environment. Sugarcane fiber biodegrades within 30 to 90 days.

5. Versatile & Durable
Sugarcane paper is surprisingly strong and durable, making it suitable for a variety of applications, including molded products like take out take out food containers and disposable tableware, and printed products like gift wrap, bags, and packaging.

6. Tree-Free Production
Unlike conventional paper, sugarcane paper production doesn't require cutting down trees. Using bagasse eases the heavy demand for virgin wood pulp, preserving vital forest ecosystems and biodiversity.

7. Reduced Carbon Footprint
Sugarcane is a substantial carbon sink, absorbing and storing a large amount of carbon dioxide during its lifecycle.
In one study, a crop of sugarcane demonstrated a net sequestration of 208.24 megatons of carbon dioxide, meaning it absorbed over 10x as much as it released.

8. Closed-Loop System
Sugarcane paper production is integrated into a smart, closed-loop system, where waste materials are repurposed, further minimizing environmental impact. Once viewed as a valueless byproduct and detrimentally burned, bagasse is now getting the glow-up it deserves, answering our growing need for paper products.
