Earth Day Design Contest 2016: Let The Voting Begin!

EARTH DAY DESIGN CONTEST: LET THE VOTING BEGIN!

We reached out to the creative community requesting their inspired interpretations of nature for our Earth Day Design Contest. The submissions are in, now let the voting begin.

Which are the patterns you find so beautiful you'd want to wrap your gifts in them all year long? You, all your friends, and the public-at-large is invited to vote between April 15-29. Winners will be announced on May 1. We know it's hard to pick just one, so name your top three favs. (And hey, there's a little something in it for you, too.)

News of the contest spread far and wide, we heard from artists from the England, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Argentina, Colombia, Hawai‘i and across the continental US. For a closer look at each of the 34 submissions, complete with the artists' comments, read on.

As we did last year, we pledged a $10 donation to Earth Day Network for each entry, to help plant trees and continue their important work of supporting environmental education across the globe. We love their tree-planting campaign, The Canopy Project, and awesome Green Schools Project. We are thrilled to write this check to the nonprofit organization that's a driving force behind Earth Day every year.

To do good near and far, we gave the designers the opportunity to name a local environmental charity of their choice to receive 5% of online sales if their pattern wins the contest and goes to print. Let's see what they came up with.

EARTH DAY DESIGN CONTEST - 2016 SUBMISSIONS:

Sweet Nevada by   Crissie Rodda Charity: Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre New Zealand My inspiration:  "My patterns are inspired by one of my favourite flowers - the Leucadendron, which I love because of its primal and simplistic beauty. While I was sketching and piecing together the patterns, they started to take on a real desert vibe. So I decided to create patterns that reflected a hardy but beautiful desert like landscape, paired with a botanical specimen like coordinating pattern."

E ola ka wai a Kāne    by   Ar tistry8 Charity: TBD My inspiration:  "Being from Hawai‘i, it isnʻt difficult to find inspiration in nature, but being from Hawai‘i and having your ancestors create the soil that we thrive from brings another level of meaning to how special that connection is. These patterns are representative of wai (water) as the source of life, and kalo (taro) as the source of our being. E ola ka wai a Kāne!"

Cactus Watercolors by   H eleen van der Thillart Charity: Natuur & Milieu My inspiration: "I love the variety in shapes, sizes and colors in cacti and succulents. We don't have them naturally here in the Netherlands, but you can buy them everywhere. For this design I chose to use watercolors, because it feels fitting for these plants. I design bright and bold designs."

They can form into a natural pattern with different groups of flowers and colors. I design bright and bold designs. For this design I wanted to create a small spring pattern that shows different shapes of color created from little groups of flowers or leaves."
